Hardware Checklist
Before touching any in-sim setting, confirm your headset’s runtime (SteamVR, Oculus/Meta, or native OpenXR) is installed and set as the active OpenXR runtime in Windows, since MSFS 2024 launches through whichever runtime is currently marked active — a common source of “VR option greyed out” reports.
In-Sim VR Settings
Inside the sim, the General → VR menu is where render scale and VR-specific graphics presets live, separate from the flat-screen graphics settings. Community-tested starting points generally recommend setting render scale slightly below 100% first, then raising it once you’ve confirmed a stable frame rate.
Fixing Common Stutter Issues
Most reported VR stutter in MSFS 2024 traces back to one of three causes: traffic/AI density set too high, terrain LOD set above what the GPU can sustain in stereo rendering, or a mismatched OpenXR runtime between the headset software and Windows. Working through these three in order resolves the majority of forum-reported cases.
Recommended OpenXR Settings
Third-party tools like OpenXR Toolkit are widely used alongside the sim’s native settings to add dynamic foveated rendering support on compatible headsets, which several community benchmarks report as a meaningful frame rate gain with minimal visible quality loss in peripheral vision.
